What are the warning signs of mental health illness?

Most of the major mental health issues including depression and anxiety don’t appear out of the blue. There could be a combination of tell-tale signs such as not being able to concentrate at your work, mood swings or feeling lonely that can indicate mental health issues.

Being aware of your developing symptoms and talking with your GPs about them can be of great help.

If any or a combination of the following warning signs are occurring, you should consider visiting your GP:

  • Feeling anxious and worried from time to time that can last from few days to few weeks
  • Sudden and dramatic changes in mood from feeling depressed to extreme anger
  • Changes in your sleeping pattern, appetite or decline in personal care
  • Being occasionally quiet, feeling withdrawn from life, refusing to socialise and lacking motivation could be warning signs of some mental health disorders.
  • Problems with concentration at work or study, speech, thinking and decision making
  • Loss of desire to participate in activities at work, community and disconnected from one’s surrounding
  • Thoughts of failure, dejected, worthlessness could be other warning signs
  • The feeling of fear and suspiciousness of others or an uncharacteristic behaviour

Why is mental health important ?

Just like physical health, a sound mental health is equally important for your overall well-being. Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety can lead to many other adverse mental conditions as well as increase the risk for other physical illnesses like Type 2 diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular diseases.

How do I know that I am suffering from mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety?

Signs and symptoms of mental health issues may vary depending on the disorder, person and circumstances that can affect your emotions, thoughts and behaviour.  You may experience mental health issues from time to time, but if you experience a persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest, then it may characterise depression or anxiety. You may also be able to assess how you feel, however, self-assessments will not diagnose your mental health issues. The best way to deal with it is to seek advice and help from your GP or a mental health professional.

How can I get help with my mental health issues?

Please book into your regular GP or one of our GPs with a special interest in Mental health online or phone our practice directly.  There are also some wonderful resources available at www.beyondblue.org.au; www.anxietyonline.org.au; www.mensline.org.au to use if you need help before getting an appointment. You may also want to explore some online Cognitive Behaviour programs such as www.thiswayup.org.au or www.ecouch.anu.edu.au.

What do I do to get urgent help?

If you are very unwell and need immediate help – please call the Ambulance on 000 and they will support you to access the local Acute Mental health team. Otherwise, there are some wonderful urgent mental health support via Lifeline 13 11 14 or online lifeline crisis support www.lifeline.org.au/Get-Help; Suicide call-back service  www.suicidecallbackservice.org.au.

What should I expect during my first GP visit?

Our GPs will listen carefully and gradually understand your situations and supports that will provide the best care you need. They will explore and make sure there are no physical causes for your change in mood or energy. This may require some tests and follow up of the results. Over a few consultations, our GP will be able to diagnose if you have a  mental health condition and provide the best psychological therapies. They will also assist you to access other appropriate care if required.

Am I eligible for a Medicare rebate for mental health?

If your GP feels you have a diagnosed Mental health condition that is eligible for a Mental health Care Plan, they will discuss this with you and arrange for a plan to be provided.

How do I know if I am eligible for a Medicare rebate?

You and your GP will be able to discuss this at length during your consultations.

Do I need a referral for seeing a psychiatrist?

Yes, under the Medicare legislation and to be able to claim your visit to a Psychiatrist with a Medicare rebate – you will need a referral from your GP.

How long will be my first session with the GP?

Mental health concerns can be complicated and complex. We encouraged all patients attending for a mental health consultation to book a “Long Appointment” (ie 20-30mins).

Does the doctor ask about my family medical history?

Yes. Family medical history and family mental health history can be very important in understanding your overall health. This then helps our GPs to provide a holistic approach to your care.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychologist is a very skilled and highly experienced professional in managing mental health conditions with the use of psychotherapy and other therapy modalities. This may be Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance Commitment therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation Therapy to name a few.
